People often ask me, how do you stay on top of the industry news so well? My answer? I listen.
One of the ways I get smarter about the field I cover is to listen to podcasts while driving, at gym, or going for a walk. The two top podcasts in this space to listen to are Marketing Voices by Jennifer Jones, and For Immediate Release by Shel and Neville.
Social Media Executive Interviews: Marketing Voices
Marketing Voices has short ‘tight’ interviews with practice leaders in the space, the questions and framing are really at an executive level, so this is the one to share with your bosses.Social Media News and Editorial: For Immediate Release
On the other hand, For Immediate Release (FIR) is about a 40 minute show that includes news, commentary, tech reports, voices from Singapore. They debate, discuss, and dig into issues at a greater depth more suitable for the practitioner –one to share with the folks in the field.
During work, I listen to the Properly Chilled podcast (iTunes) and Dave’s Lounge (iTunes) to get the latest beats, each one is often an hour long of free, fresh music.
What podcasts do you listen to for professional education and for music?
I love Marketing Over Coffee by Chris Penn and John Wall. It is one I never miss http://www.marketingovercoffee.com/. They cover both classic and new marketing. The program is runs about 20 minutes and comes out on Thursday mornings. The show is so dense with material, ideas, and links that I find I have to listen to it somewhere that I can take notes or check out the links they refer to.
Great tips.
On the musical side, check out http://somafm.com/, particularly Groove Salad.
Totally commercial free.

I can’t get enough of Mitch Joel and his Podcast, Six Pixels of Separation. It’s really covers everything new, interesting and cool about Marketing, plus he sprinkles in some amazing guests and conversations.
For Immediate Release is also on the top of my list and I also love Managing The Gray with C.C. Chapman.
Jeremiah,
I listen to Drive Thru Interactive’s small business podcast which covers topics such as Google paid search, local search marketing and various features of Web 2.0.

Jeremiah, Thanks a lot; I appreciate the nod of support for sure. Glad to hear you like the format of the show. People tell me I should go to video and yet I feel that the “transportability” like you described is key to the success of the show. As you know, I am always interested in new guests too who have lots to tell the listeners. The guests who work best are informative, and give what I like to call, the “fast facts”.
I also will check out the other’s comments here for great podcasts.
Jeremiah:
For Immediate Release is at the very top of my must-listen-to podcast list (in the way of disclosure, I co-hosted a recent episode) — and has been since I started listening to podcasts in the spring of 2005. Shel and Neville do an outstanding job covering the intersection of business communications, technology, and social media. They produce two 1-hour shows per week, and I don’t miss a single one!
Here are a couple of other business podcasts I’d recommend:
* Six Pixels of Separation, hosted by Mitch Joel. http://www.twistimage.com/blog/
Mitch’s weekly show covers digital marketing and personal branding. He frequently interviews leading marketers as well. Mitch is based in Montreal, Canada, but material is not overly Canada-centric.
* Inside PR. http://www.insidepr.ca/
This podcast also comes from Canada and covers a different PR topic each work. Best for students or new PR pros.
Bryan, Jay
I listened to Six Pixels of Separation for a few episodes, if I knew Mitch I think I may get it more, I don’t think it was for me –I need hard hitting industry insight and commentary.
Thanks, good tip for Inside PR for folks coming into the flock.
Thanks for listening, and thanks for spreading the word! =^)
This post caught my eye as I recently switched from an ipod music/radio combo in the car to primarily listening to podcasts. I think sorting out the good ones is a challenge, but they’re out there. My current favorite is NPR’s Planet Money podcast…it has been way more helpful than any combo of print/web/tv news in understanding our financial crisis, how it relates to me, and how we’re going to fix it.
Of course, now I have a bunch more to check out!
