Sometimes, quiet weeks are good weeks.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>Feature: LinkedIn builds community with &#8216;Groups&#8217; <\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/linkedingroups\">Now launching this groups feature<\/a> (similar to Google Groups and Yahoo Groups) it&#8217;ll help users build more of a discussion to self support each other online.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Features: Facebook&#8217;s Newsfeed improved<\/strong><br \/>\nNick O&#8217;Neill has a live video showing the interactive and dynamic features of Facebook&#8217;s &#8220;Live Feed&#8221; feature, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allfacebook.com\/2008\/08\/facebook-live-feed-kills-twitter-friendfeed\/\">a real-time life streaming aggregation tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sunset: Yahoo shuts down SoNet &#8216;Mash&#8217;<\/strong><br \/>\nListed as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2008\/08\/28\/yahoo-shuts-down-mash-0-4-on-social-networking\/\">Yahoo&#8217;s fourth failure at social networks<\/a>, they&#8217;ve now shut down Mash. Where should they look?  Yahoo mail is one of the largest social graphs around<\/p>\n<p><strong>Virtual Goods: Facebook creates virtual currency<\/strong><br \/>\nThis analysis suggests that Facebook&#8217;s virtual goods are <a href=\"http:\/\/lsvp.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/02\/facebook-selling-digital-gifts-at-a-35m-run-rate\/\">creating virtual goods as currency upwards in the $35 million range<\/a>, yet we must remember it&#8217;s only worth as much as what people buy it for.<\/p>\n<p><strong>User Experience: Facebook puts brakes on Wall Spam<\/strong><br \/>\nAn interesting dilemma, this popular social network encourages developers and brands to participate, yet they&#8217;ve got to control the user experience above all else, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-13577_3-10024529-36.html\">and look to control wall spam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deployment: Marriott launches communtiy using LiveWorld<\/strong><br \/>\nInteresting how hotels are getting on the bandwagon as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hotelmarketing.com\/index.php\/content\/article\/marriott_launches_online_travel_community\/\">Marriott launches online community<\/a> for Marriott Rewards. Link <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forrester.com\/rb\/analyst\/henry_harteveldt\">via Henry Harteveldt<\/a>. Congrats to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liveworld.com\">Liveworld<\/a> for earning the customer, I had to go hunt online to find out who the vendor was.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Acquisition: Book based SoNet Shelfari gulped by Amazon<\/strong><br \/>\nAmazon to move into the social networking arena with this recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2008\/08\/25\/amazon-aquires-shelfari-moves-to-corner-social-book-space\/\">purchase of Shelfari<\/a> a community based application that let&#8217;s people create virtual &#8216;bookshelves&#8217; to share with others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mobile: Hi5 moves to mobile<\/strong><br \/>\nExpect Hi5&#8217;s online growth to fuel it&#8217;s recent <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-13577_3-10025661-36.html\">launch of 26 languages of it&#8217;s mobile version of it&#8217;s social network<\/a>, given that many cultures lean on mobile communications over US based browser, this could be a medium for growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Security: MySpace Login Held Ransom to Music Artist<\/strong><br \/>\nNot sure how to react to this, but <a href=\"http:\/\/valleywag.com\/5043013\/4chan-hacker-holds-rapper-soulja-boys-myspace-account-ransom\">Soulja Boy hip hop artist had his logins to MySpace and YouTube<\/a> held ransom from a 12 year old boy demanding 2500 dollars. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Awards: Neighborhood America receives accolade<\/strong><br \/>\nInsight community vendor, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neighborhoodamerica.com\/pressrelease\/77\">Neighborhood America receives award at the Always On AO &#8216;Global 250 Winners&#8217;<\/a> for innovation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deployment: McCain launches community via Kickapps<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2008\/08\/28\/close-encounters-of-the-republican-kind-mccainspace-relaunches\/\">McCain launches his online community<\/a>, in sync with the announcement of his new VP.  This online community (<a href=\"http:\/\/community.mccainspace.com\/kickapps\/_\/club\/58707\/41158.html\">the URL indicates it&#8217;s from KickApps<\/a>) energizes young republicans to connect to each other, and then spread word of mouth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Features: Blogger.com launches profiles<\/strong><br \/>\nThis trend, in which blogs like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2008\/08\/29\/seeds-of-a-social-network-blogger-adds-new-following-feature\/\">blogger.com are now becoming more like social networks<\/a> emulating MyBlogLog features or even SixApart&#8217;s intention to make blogs more &#8216;social&#8217;.  Expect to see a more formal announcement for wordpress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advertisements: Contextual ads spit insults<\/strong><br \/>\nThis reporter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/09\/02\/AR2008090202956.html\">isn&#8217;t happy being called &#8220;muffin top&#8221;<\/a> in her contextual Facebook ads.  We shouldn&#8217;t blame Facebook for this, it was likely the advertisers choice, and besides&#8230;it worked.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>PR professionals that have clients in this space, should subscribe to this blog, and ensure their clients are put on this digest by sending me an email, or better yet, leave a comment.
