Start with the Web Strategy Summary, then quickly scan the succinct and categorized headlines, read text for my take, and click link to dive in for more.<\/p>\n<p>You can subscribe to this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.web-strategist.com\/blog\/category\/digest\/feed\">digest tag<\/a> <em>only<\/em>, which filters only these posts tagged digest. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Web Strategy Summary<\/strong><br \/>\nLinux World spurred several announcements from vendors in this space, Friendster seeks Asian domination with new CEO, and Facebook community groans over Scrabble change of hands.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>OpenSource: Kickapps connects with CMS, Blogs, and CRM<\/strong><br \/>\nAt the Linux conference this week, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kickapps.com\/blog\/kickapps_linux_world_2008\/\">Kickapps leans into it&#8217;s opensource vendors Joomla, Drupal and WordPress<\/a>, expect to see social features integrate with CMS, CRM and blogging software tools &#8211;things all mash up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OpenSource: Alfresco hunts Sharepoint market<\/strong><br \/>\nAlfresco launches <a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.alfresco.com\/wiki\/Alfresco_Labs_3\">labs (Beta 3)<\/a> the open source alternative to Sharepoint at Linux World this week. Given that many enterprises have sharepoint available to them, (and most require enterprise class support) it&#8217;ll be interesting to see adoption of this suite.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Widgets: How Hasbro Should Fix Scrabble<\/strong><br \/>\nHasbro took more blows from the community this week, after they denounced Scrabulous and then launched their own version (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-13577_3-10003821-36.html\">while Facebook did little<\/a>), this opinion gives specific <a href=\"http:\/\/www.informationweek.com\/blog\/main\/archives\/2008\/08\/advice_to_hasbr.html\">advice that Hasbro should consider<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advertising: Despite heavy ad spend, American Apparel sinks<\/strong><br \/>\nYou&#8217;ve seen their ads, soft 70s porn splattered on banners and skyscrapers &#8211;apparently, <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2008\/08\/05\/american-apparel-advertising\/\">this advertising effort isn&#8217;t paying off<\/a> &#8211;or at least for the bottom line for American Apparel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research: Social networks folks consume more media<\/strong><br \/>\nTwo recent surveys conducted by ABI Research have revealed that compared to average mobile phone service subscribers, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/news\/story\/online-social-networkers-consume-more\/story.aspx?guid=%7B470B9C5D-DA9A-41A5-9E48-E6AAC1E53767%7D&#038;dist=hppr\">those who also participate in online social networking are heavier consumers of digital content<\/a> including text messages, mobile email, photos, music, games and mobile TV<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leadership: Friendster nabs top Google exec<\/strong><br \/>\nIn an attempt to grow their Asian market, they&#8217;ve already got traction in Singapore, and look to extend to other markets <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wired.com\/business\/2008\/08\/friendster-name.html\">under the leadership of Richard Kimber<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Feature: Facebook&#8217;s Auto Tagging feature<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-17939_109-10004835-2.html\">Auto-tagging feature in Facebook<\/a> could be cursor to &#8216;semantic&#8217; web where meaning and context is extracted without human involvement. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Feature: Facebook enables filtering for newsfeed<\/strong><br \/>\nMicro <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidefacebook.com\/2008\/07\/31\/first-look-at-facebook-news-feed-filters-beta-launching-tonight\/\">controls over newsfeed granularity are now provided to users<\/a>, to tweek, tune, and refine a newsfeed.  While most users won&#8217;t use this feature, it&#8217;s quite similar to what Friendfeed has been offering. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture: Why western social networks fail in Japan<\/strong><br \/>\nTechcrunch guest author, Serkan Toto lists out why cultural differences make it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2008\/08\/03\/taking-social-networks-abroad-why-myspace-and-facebook-are-failing-in-japan\/\">difficult for western social networks to succeed in Japan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Analysis: Gartner&#8217;s Generation V<\/strong><br \/>\nGartner extends their coverage to online communities and provides this telling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketingcharts.com\/interactive\/generation-v-defies-traditional-demographics-5495\/gartner-generation-virtual-engagement-levels-june-2008jpg\/\">quadrant of user behaviors<\/a>.  They&#8217;ve provided <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gartner.com\/it\/page.jsp?id=721008\">additional information from their own website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Application: Scrabulous launches Wordscraper<\/strong><br \/>\nIn response to getting shut down, the founders of Scrabulous launch a twist on Scrabble by offering <a href=\"http:\/\/pulse2.com\/2008\/07\/30\/scrabulous-relaunches-under-a-new-facebook-app-name-called-wordscraper\/\">a customized more robust version called Wordscraper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Visualizations: Social Networks as art<\/strong><br \/>\nNeed a background screen this collection of <a href=\"http:\/\/socialmediatrader.com\/10-amazing-visualizations-of-social-networks\/\">10 social networking visualizations<\/a> will inspire the inner social geek, link via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mike-manuel.com\/blog\/\">Mike Manual<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vertical: Keep track of deceased &#8220;MySpace Deaths&#8221;<\/strong><br \/>\nMorbid yes, but needed? perhaps.
