{"id":2509,"date":"2008-05-26T07:31:40","date_gmt":"2008-05-26T14:31:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.web-strategist.com\/blog\/2008\/05\/26\/is-your-company-market-driven-or-product-driven\/"},"modified":"2008-05-26T07:47:19","modified_gmt":"2008-05-26T14:47:19","slug":"is-your-company-market-driven-or-product-driven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web-strategist.com\/blog\/2008\/05\/26\/is-your-company-market-driven-or-product-driven\/","title":{"rendered":"Is your Company Market Driven or Product Driven?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The battle between Marketers and Engineers has been going on for a while, Engineers claim that building the best product is enough to succeed, and Marketers claim that understand the external forces (competitors, customers, needs) is the solution.  <\/p>\n<p>Update: saw an interesting tweet <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/tomob\/statuses\/820211748\">from tomob<\/a>: &#8220;@jowyang &#8211; the engineer&#8217;s pipe dream = product so good we don&#8217;t need sales or marketing&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve seen cases of heavy engineering companies like Google, with little marketing efforts become <a href=\"http:\/\/searchengineland.com\/070809-092238.php\">the most well known brand online<\/a>.  On the other hand, companies like Coke spends a major portion of their corporate budget on Marketing, <a href=\"http:\/\/images.businessweek.com\/ss\/06\/07\/top_brands\/source\/1.htm\">to become the top brand<\/a> in the world.  <\/p>\n<p>Or, take Apple, which has great products (although it was debated that Sony had a superior MP3 player &#8211;but didn&#8217;t know how to market it) also does sophisticated brand and emotional branding aimed at a be different lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>To add color, <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/andrewparadies\/statuses\/820212674\">andrewparadies tweets<\/a>: &#8220;@jowyang I&#8217;d argue that it takes a pretty strong combination of both to succeed. Apple has great marketing, but they also make solid product&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>Now add social computing, where we companies are using blogs to market their companies, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.web-strategist.com\/blog\/2008\/05\/02\/build-your-own-ideastorm-with-uservoice\/\">SalesForce&#8217;s Ideas or Uservoice<\/a> to let customers define how engineering will focus, things start to mix up, the lines blur.  In the end, marketers need engineers, and engineers need marketers, but the balance will vary.  <\/p>\n<p>With social media, how will your company improve it&#8217;s marketing or engineering?
