Having been in Silicon Valley for over two decades, I can confidently say that the current focus and energy directed towards AI is unlike anything I&#8217;ve seen before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In July alone, and the month isn&#8217;t even over yet, we&#8217;ve witnessed a series of significant AI-related developments from major tech companies, all within this week:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Google: Sergey Brin, one of the founders, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/sergey-brin-google-ai-gemini-1b5aa41e?mod=e2tw&amp;utm_source=jowyang.beehiiv.com&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=the-unprecedented-surge-of-ai-by-big-tech\">has returned to Google to help lead AI initiatives<\/a>. Also, I\u2019ve been granted access to Google&#8217;s generative search this week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apple: Rumors are circulating that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-07-19\/apple-preps-ajax-generative-ai-apple-gpt-to-rival-openai-and-google?utm_source=jowyang.beehiiv.com&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=the-unprecedented-surge-of-ai-by-big-tech\">Apple is working on its own Foundational Model,<\/a> rumored to be called AJAX. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meta\/Facebook: The social media giant <a href=\"https:\/\/ai.meta.com\/llama\/?utm_source=jowyang.beehiiv.com&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=the-unprecedented-surge-of-ai-by-big-tech\">launched Llama2<\/a>, an open-source project. Why? developer onboarding, set industry standards, and prepare for their own LLM with community approval.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NVIDIA: The tech company has thrown its weight behind Inflection AI, contributing to the creation of the world&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techpowerup.com\/310783\/inflection-ai-builds-supercomputer-with-22-000-nvidia-h100-gpus?utm_source=jowyang.beehiiv.com&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=the-unprecedented-surge-of-ai-by-big-tech\">second-largest supercomputer<\/a> with 22k chips.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microsoft: The software titan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/inflection-ai-raises-13-bln-funding-microsoft-others-2023-06-29\/?utm_source=jowyang.beehiiv.com&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=the-unprecedented-surge-of-ai-by-big-tech\">has invested in Inflection AI<\/a> (along with NVIDIA) and backed Llama2, demonstrating a clear strategic focus on AI.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Twitter\/Musk: A new AI project, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/7\/12\/23792553\/elon-musk-xai-artificial-intelligence-company\">X.ai, was announced<\/a>, adding to the growing list of AI initiatives backed by Elon Musk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amazon: The e-commerce behemoth is expected to launch the Titan Foundational Model soon, in addition to Bedrock and the <a href=\"https:\/\/aws-startup-lofts.com\/amer\/program\/accelerators\/generative-ai?utm_source=jowyang.beehiiv.com&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=the-unprecedented-surge-of-ai-by-big-tech\">Gen AI cohort<\/a> in SF debuts this coming week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Salesforce: Salesforce announced the launch of Einstein GPT, its AI platform, signaling a renewed commitment to AI, my friend Clara leads <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7087658279929073664\/?utm_source=jowyang.beehiiv.com&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=the-unprecedented-surge-of-ai-by-big-tech\">AI, and shares<\/a> on LInkedin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These developments are not isolated events but part of a larger trend. Big Tech&#8217;s focus on AI is not just about creating smarter products and services.
