I see a clear trend of information continuing to be distributed and amorphous, moving from one network to another.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>MySpace Developer Program cometh Feb 5th<\/strong><br \/>\nThe MySpace developer program is opening so <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsfactor.com\/story.xhtml?story_id=0010003B3XTU\">third party widget and application creators can launch on MySpace<\/a>, just as Facebook does.<br \/>\nBen is working with the team <a href=\"http:\/\/benmetcalfe.com\/blog\/index.php\/2008\/01\/29\/myspace-developer-platform-opening-on-tuesday-sign-up-now\/\">and welcomes you in<\/a>.  I&#8217;ve done some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.web-strategist.com\/blog\/2008\/02\/05\/quicktake-the-web-strategist-should-watch-the-myspace-developer-platform\/\">analysis on what it means in this quicktake, why most should just wait and watch while the widget developers experiment<\/a>. <a href=\" Weekly Digest of the Social Networking Space: Jan 30, 2008\">Dan Farber has additional analysis on what it means<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Security: Concerns about image uploader vulnerabilities<\/strong><br \/>\nThe industry has concerns over there being <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.com\/8301-10789_3-9864121-57.html\">security flaws in image uploaders for MySpace and Facebook.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Features: Facebook Suggests Friends<\/strong><br \/>\nUsing it&#8217;s matching and contextual enginges, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allfacebook.com\/2008\/02\/facebook-begins-suggesting-friends\/\">Facebook is spawning a feature that recommends friends<\/a>, something similiar to dating sites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advertising: Google admits social networking ads not working<\/strong><br \/>\nThe use case of social networks vs search engines are radically different, people use social networks to connect with others, communicate and to self express, it&#8217;s often not a hunt for information.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.com\/8301-10784_3-9862529-7.html\">Google admits that advertising on social networks is not working<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Social Graph: Google releases an API to aggregate your many networks<\/strong><br \/>\nI&#8217;m really glad to see that Google has taken a step forward to <a href=\"http:\/\/google-code-updates.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/urls-are-people-too.html\">releasing an API that let&#8217;s you connect users from the many different networks<\/a>.  Brad Fitzpatrick has lead the charge here, watch his video.  New to the concept, read this primer on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.web-strategist.com\/blog\/2007\/11\/10\/what-is-social-graph-executives\/\">how to explain the social graph to your executives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Generation Gap: Kids not pleased with adults on Social Networks<\/strong><br \/>\nAs self-expression continues to be one of the top uses of social networks, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.com.au\/technology\/story\/0,25642,23125981-5014239,00.html?from=mostpop\">kids find parents activities on social networks intrusive<\/a>. If you&#8217;re a parent and have to deal with rejection from a child, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.web-strategist.com\/blog\/2007\/08\/14\/crises-management-template-child-relations-for-social-networks-facebook\/\">follow this child relations template I created<\/a>. (humor)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marketshare: MySpace leads but Facebook closing gap<\/strong><br \/>\nYou can see <a href=\"http:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2008\/01\/16\/hitwise-myspace-still-more-than-twice-the-size-of-facebook-in-the-us-but-falling\/\">the marketshare of the top 10 social networks in North America<\/a>, MySpace dominates, although Facebook is following, Bebo has just a small marginal audience with little growth rate by market share.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tie-In: WSJ adds social features with Facebook<\/strong><br \/>\nWSJ will now have social features that l<a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20080130\/ap_on_hi_te\/apfn_wsj_widget\">et readers know which articles are popular, fueled by a users&#8217; friends in Faceboo<\/a>k.  Beyond recommendation engines, this is a social powered recommendation engine, which should in turn, provide higher relevancy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Version: Kickapps announce next iteration<\/strong><br \/>\nKickapps touts it&#8217;s newest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kickapps.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/31\/kickapps-3.0\/\">version 3.0 which is aimed at making social networks easier to deploy<\/a>.  In our briefing with them, we were impressed with their strong widget development tools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fatigue: Are people getting tired of social networks?<\/strong><br \/>\nThere&#8217;s so much effort going into building the next generation social network, have we taken the time to think about users <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2008\/01\/31\/myspace_fb_comscore_drop\/\">becoming tired and fatigued with social network<\/a>s?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Campaign: Movie marketing on social networks<\/strong><br \/>\nI really like this movie placement, they&#8217;re using many of the social tools that Facebook offers, acquires fans, and encourages discussion in this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cloverfieldmovie\">Cloverfield movie<\/a> campaign. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Aggregation: Six apart lets you aggregate social media on blog<\/strong><br \/>\nAfter a briefing with blogging software company Six Apart, they&#8217;ve now released a feature <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sixapart.com\/about\/news\/2008\/01\/time_for_action.html\">called Activity Streams that lets the blogger aggregate activity from other social sites<\/a> (like twitter, digg, delcicious) in a news feed or news page type box on your blog.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Leave a comment if this Digest was helpful, or if you&#8217;ve anything to add.
