{"id":15064,"date":"2013-07-17T03:59:49","date_gmt":"2013-07-17T10:59:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.web-strategist.com\/blog\/?p=15064"},"modified":"2013-08-04T12:03:49","modified_gmt":"2013-08-04T19:03:49","slug":"four-ways-the-crowd-gets-what-they-need-from-each-other-without-buying-from-companies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web-strategist.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/17\/four-ways-the-crowd-gets-what-they-need-from-each-other-without-buying-from-companies\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Ways the Crowd Gets What they Need From Each Other  Without Buying from Companies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Gift by asenat29, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/72153088@N08\/6510934443\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7010\/6510934443_8bd2942b79.jpg\" alt=\"Gift\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Above image:\u00a0 The collaborative economy empowers people to get what they need from each other  without even having to go the store.\u00a0 \u00a0Read about four of the many startups that are enabling this behavior below.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m a little worried this morning.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m in Minneapolis, the capital city for consumer packaged goods, durable goods, and\u00a0some of the top retailer brands in the entire world. \u00a0I&#8217;m here to speak to 300 corporate folks, at an event hosted by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.magnet360.com\/events\/becoming-a-customer-company-with-magnet-360-and-salesforce-com\/\">Magnet 360, Salesforce, and Marketo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What am I going to tell them?\u00a0 That people are shifting their behaviors and, enabled by internet tools, that they can share products with each other   rather than buy them.\u00a0\u00a0I&#8217;m going to tell them that people can buy once and that then they can share the products that they have acquired with each other many times over.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to tell them that the people in the crowd can get what they want from each other, and that their reliance on corporations can be reduced. \u00a0I&#8217;m going to tell them that they could be facing reduced revenues. \u00a0I&#8217;m even going to tell them that they could potentially <em>lose<\/em> their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>As I prepare to head to the stage in a few hours, I must admit that some ominous<em> <\/em>thoughts are racing thoughts my mind.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to deliver some bad news. \u00a0How will they react?\u00a0 Will they tune me out and surf Instagram, ignore me or tweet bad things about me?\u00a0 Or, maybe, throw those little Italian hotel candies at me?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m here to tell them there are many reasons why this sharing movement\u00a0is\u00a0happening.\u00a0 Not only does social technology make it super easy for people to connect, but, for some people, sharing\u00a0<em>used<\/em>\u00a0goods is often just as good as buying new.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll tell them that a new class of &#8220;Conscious\u00a0Consumers&#8221; wants to reduce needless consumption. \u00a0I&#8217;ll also tell them that, due to the rapid increase in world population, we really don&#8217;t have a choice as a planet, but must be more careful with our fixed resources<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m even going to tell them that I, myself, have become a Conscious\u00a0Consumer. \u00a0Aside from consumables, like food, gas, and personal health items, I can count on one hand the physical goods I&#8217;ve purchased in the last two months:\u00a0 A fancy hands-free phone for my home office, a fancy purse for my ever-deserving wife, and a pair of customized Nike ID running shoes.\u00a0 I may even read\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.web-strategist.com\/blog\/category\/collaborative-economy\/asdf\">my heartfelt letter to brands<\/a>, telling them how my lifestyle is starting to change. \u00a0That means my relationship with brands will change along with it.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re probably wondering, who does this?\u00a0 Is it just Asian-American Industry Analysts with four-syllable first names and impossible-to-pronounce last names that live in Northern California?\u00a0 It could be, but if you read,\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shareable.net\/share-or-die\">Share or Die<\/a>, by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/gorenflo\">Neal Gorenflo<\/a>\u00a0of Shareable magazine, he talks about how this\u00a0&#8220;asset-light&#8221;\u00a0movement is common among Generation Y, people who are accustomed to sharing on the internet, yet are saddled with an enormous burden of college debt. \u00a0They really have no choice.\u00a0 Or I may tell them about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/andrewhy.de\/minimalism-project-update-39-things\/\">internet leader Andrew Hyde<\/a>\u00a0who reduced his personal goods inventory to 39 items and experienced the feeling of freedom.\u00a0 I might tell them about my trips to Europe and Asia, where this practice has been common for a quite a long time. Or about how is becoming more prominent in densely populated American cities like New York and San Francisco with sharing of bikes, cars, houses, gardens, and even food.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll share with them these four examples of startups that will ultimately reduce their revenue:<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<hr align=\"center\" noshade=\"noshade\" size=\"1\" width=\"100%\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yerdle.com\/\">Yerdle<\/a><\/strong><strong>\u00a0taps Facebook to find and share goods<\/strong>.\u00a0 This clever website, which uses Facebook connect with your friends, enables you to share goods and products with people already trust rather than with than some stranger on Craigslist or eBay. \u00a0It was founded by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andy_ruben\">Andy Ruben<\/a>, the former Chief Sustainability Officer at Wal-Mart (shocker!). \u00a0I had the chance to have breakfast with Andy a few weeks ago and learned how he believes products can be easily gifted to each other, which ultimately also put a drain on corporate revenues.\u00a0 I quickly realized this idea also has profound impacts for governments who depend on taxable revenues.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nextdoor.com\/\">NextDoor<\/a><\/strong><strong>\u00a0connects you with your local neighborhood.<\/strong>\u00a0 Startups popped onto my radar thanks to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vivowang\">Viv Wang<\/a>\u00a0who&#8217;s actively watching this space.\u00a0 This is a local social network. \u00a0And by local, I mean very local.\u00a0 After you verify your identity and location, it connects you with your geographic local neighborhood.\u00a0 Your local community becomes a place to exchange ideas and sell, or even gift, goods and services to each other.\u00a0 Need sugar? \u00a0You can get that from a neighbor you haven&#8217;t yet met just a block away.\u00a0 Need to get rid of some old skis? \u00a0Sell them on NextDoor or gift them to that college kid down the street.\u00a0 Need to borrow a lawn mower? \u00a0That should be there too.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stokebox.com\/\">Stokebox<\/a><\/strong><strong>\u00a0provides for the sharing of collections of goods.<\/strong>\u00a0 The newest one, which was placed on my awareness list by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/iizliz\">Liz Philips<\/a>, allows people to get a box of hand-me-downs from strangers rather than family members.\u00a0 You can do things like offer a box of clothes and toys for an infant, and in exchange, or for a very low fee, get a box of clothes and toys for a toddler.\u00a0 Imagine how this can simplify the lives of already overwhelmed parents by reducing trips to the store and increasing their disposable income.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/giftflow.org\/\">GiftFlow<\/a><\/strong><strong>\u00a0empowers people to ask for what they need.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0What if you need something, but don&#8217;t have something to offer?\u00a0 The &#8220;gift economy&#8221; enables people to ask for what they need. Those who have can give within this new form of economy.\u00a0 People who continue to give and gift are rewarded by their own intrinsic satisfaction.\u00a0 Reputation reporting systems may eventually emerge to show who the digital Mother Teresas are in this generation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<hr align=\"center\" noshade=\"noshade\" size=\"1\" width=\"100%\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p>That&#8217;s just a small list. \u00a0If you want to see more,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.web-strategist.com\/blog\/2013\/02\/24\/the-master-list-of-the-collaborative-economy-rent-and-trade-everything\/\">I have compiled a list of over 200 of these startups<\/a>\u00a0(with the help of a Taskrabbit, I might add) that are emerging in every vertical and sector around the globe.\u00a0 In each case, the crowd can get what it needs from\u00a0each other, without having to go to corporations, brands, retailers, or merchants.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that our research has found a solution for brands, retailers, and corporations. \u00a0The hard part for the companies is that it requires them to let go of trying to control the market.\u00a0 But, in exchange, they&#8217;ll actually gain more of the market!\u00a0 Here&#8217;s how it works:<\/p>\n<p>We call this the &#8220;Collaborative Economy Value Chain&#8221; (try saying that fast, five times), and we&#8217;ve identified three business models where companies can work\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">with<\/span>\u00a0the startups and the crowd:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Company as a Service<\/strong>:\u00a0 Where companies offer products on demand for rental, rather than for sale.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Motivate a Marketplace<\/strong>:\u00a0 Where companies enable their customers to sell used goods. \u00a0The companies can make a percentage, or profit from value-added services.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide a Platform<\/strong>:\u00a0 Where companies collaborate with the crowd to reduce costs and promote innovation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you want to know more about this subject, you may\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.web-strategist.com\/blog\/2013\/06\/04\/report-corporations-must-join-the-collaborative-economy\/\">read the full report on the collaborative economy value chain<\/a>\u00a0(available to anyone) and watch the video, which delves into deeper detail about how companies can use this movement to their advantage, rather than be displaced by it.<\/p>\n<p>I leave you with this final thought:\u00a0\u00a0<em>When the people in the crowd begin to collaborate to get what they need, it means that corporations must join in, or risk serious disruption of business.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Above image:&nbsp; The collaborative economy empowers people to get what they need from each other without even having to go the store.&nbsp; &nbsp;Read about four of the many startups that are enabling this behavior below.
