{"id":13235,"date":"2013-01-28T01:01:48","date_gmt":"2013-01-28T08:01:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.web-strategist.com\/blog\/?p=13235"},"modified":"2013-01-29T06:56:22","modified_gmt":"2013-01-29T13:56:22","slug":"10-key-stats-of-the-community-manager-space-cmad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web-strategist.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/28\/10-key-stats-of-the-community-manager-space-cmad\/","title":{"rendered":"10 Key Stats of the Community Manager Space #CMAD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Update: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.web-strategist.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/28\/wrapup-community-manager-day-2013-trended\/\">Here&#8217;s a Wrapup of #CMAD 2013, which Trended<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today is Community Manager Appreciation Day, in celebration of saluting this important role changing the face of corporations and customers everywhere, I wanted to share original data and insights on the state of the space. \u00a0Community Manager Day (#<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search\/realtime?q=%23cmad&amp;src=typd\">CMAD<\/a>) is hosted globally every fourth Monday in Jan, I&#8217;ll do a wrap up post and cross-link for this fourth year. \u00a0Why do Community Managers get their own day? \u00a0Essentially, they serve customers every other day, so they should get a day of thanks to highlight how they&#8217;re changing the face of business, customer care, and our industry. \u00a0Here&#8217;s key stats on the essential skills, requirements of community managers, as well who they follow the most on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Top Required Skills of the Community Manager<\/strong><br \/>\nAltimeter Group conducted analysis of 30 global job descriptions of Community Managers to ascertain patterns on job requirements and skills.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Screen Shot 2013-01-26 at 1.52.39 PM by jeremiah_owyang, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jeremiah_owyang\/8417227649\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8336\/8417227649_5c302b1c42.jpg\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2013-01-26 at 1.52.39 PM\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Above: \u00a0Out of 30 Community Manager job descriptions, the most critical requested skills were writing ability (83%), customer relations in online channels in normal daily conditions (76%), and working with other departments (53%). \u00a0Other critical skills included reporting, and providing feedback to product teams on innovations and improvements. \u00a0A few of the requirements included passion\/tact\/clever people skills, as well as passion for the topic and vertical the CM was covering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Top Tools of the Community Manager<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Screen Shot 2013-01-26 at 2.19.38 PM by jeremiah_owyang, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jeremiah_owyang\/8417297709\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8493\/8417297709_b79610bd06.jpg\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2013-01-26 at 2.19.38 PM\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Above: \u00a0Interestingly, 43% requested that Community Managers to participate in social networks &#8211;not just online communities owned by the brand. \u00a0 The heritage of the term originated with online communities (before Facebook and Twitter were founded) but the job requirements now suggest that 43% of community manager roles must interact with customers wherever they go.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Top Experience Requirements of the Community Manager<br \/>\n<\/strong>Job Experience Requirements: Out of the 30 job descriptions, 13 (43%) required bachelor degrees, and a majority required that they have Years required about 2.5 &#8211; 3 years of experience in social\/marketing\/customer service. Additionally, 6 companies had a requirement that the community manager have 2.5 &#8211; 3 years of experience in the specific vertical which they were serving.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) The Most Followed Community Managers are in America, Western Europe<br \/>\n<\/strong>If you&#8217;re seeking to reach community managers in person, you&#8217;ll find key global hotspots in East Coast US, Western Europe, and a scattering up and down the West US Coast. \u00a0This represents the top 500 followed community managers (update: <a href=\"http:\/\/getlittlebird.com\/2013\/01\/meet-the-top-1000-community-managers-on-twitter-globally\/\">Little Bird has provided a method and list of top 1000 CMs<\/a>), and is not representative of the thousands of total CMs in the entire industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><a title=\"Locations of the Top 500 Community Managers by jeremiah_owyang, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jeremiah_owyang\/8419737321\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8237\/8419737321_5eae665408.jpg\" alt=\"Locations of the Top 500 Community Managers\" width=\"500\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>5) Most Influential Community Practitioners\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nLong time friend, Marshall Kirkpatrick (RWW, now entrepreneur) provided me data on influential community managers in Twitter. While I&#8217;m not involved in creating his social analytics product, <a href=\"http:\/\/getlittlebird.com\">Little Bird<\/a>\u00a0they provide this service analysis to any topical community.\u00a0By analyzing which Community Managers are most followed in Twitter by their peers, he generated a list. Here are the most followed (thereby highest potential of Influence) Community Managers followed by their peers.
